What’s the Best Timber to Use for Timber Decking?

At Narangba Timbers, our “decksperts” know more about timber decking than any customer service people in the Brisbane area. We pride ourselves on providing the best customer service in the business. One of the most common questions we get is, “What is the best timber to use for timber decking?”

Sadly, there is no “one size fits all” answer. Luckily, though, it’s not that difficult to find what’s best for you. Here’s what to consider.

What’s the Best Timber to Use for Timber Decking?

Where Is Your Deck Located?

Answering this question will help you make a lot of decisions. Is it going to be on the side of the house that gets a lot of sun or the side that gets a lot of shade? Is it going to be an elevated deck with stairs or is it going to be a first floor deck with almost no elevation? How close is it to water?

In Brisbane, our climate dictates that we use timber species which protect us from the climate and from termites, lyctid borers and other pests. This means a hardwood that is high on the durability scale or softwood that is treated with an agent that protects the timber.

Our Favourite Timber

Our favorite Timber species for decking is Merbau. It has a rich unique color and a distinctive grain that most of us in the business find irresistible. Nobody ever complains about the appearance of a Timber deck that is built with merbau.

However, there are plenty of other hardwood species that work just fine. You may like them better. They include Spotted Gum, Pacific Jarrah and Mixed Reds (Ironbark and Grey Gum).

In addition, you may want to use treated pine. It depends on personal taste. That is why we have our timber display deck.

At our timber sales facility, we have a display deck that can help you select the right timber decking materials for your project. We have build a display deck out of many different timber species and finishes. This allows you to experience the finished product yourself and decide which timbers and finishes are correct for you.
