Laminated Beams & Structural Engineered Timber – A Sustainable Alternative
Engineered wood products have all the natural beauty of wood, and are designed for specific applications. They make efficient use of wood and hence are more sustainable.
Glued laminated timber (or glulam) is made by gluing together several graded and seasoned wood layers using a structural adhesive. This produces a solid member with the wood grains of the layers running parallel to one another.
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is made by binding together thin wooden veneers for more dimensional stability.
The laminated timber usually is of a higher grade than the individual laminates. You can also design them in such a way that the top and bottom laminates (usually the ones bearing more stress) are of higher strength. With this method, lightweight beams with long spans are achieved.
At Narangba Timbers, all of our laminated timber is sourced from environmentally sustainable plantations and is EWPAA-certified (Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia). We stock:
- Glue Laminated Beams which are used for strong horizontal beams or vertical columns
- Laminated Veneer Lumber which may be used for structural applications like joists, columns, rafters, beams, headers etc.
When used in exposed areas, appropriate weather protection must be used to ensure durability. This can be ensured by using a proper finish that provides both moisture and ultraviolet light protection – ask our team for advice on the best one for your project.
