Build a Timber Deck in Time for Spring

You have probably noticed that a lot of people in Brisbane and Sydney have built their own timber deck. The average block size and average home size have both decreased in the last thirty years, especially in capital city statistical areas. Since we love our free time and we love our outdoor time, timber decking has become a handy solution for many who want more space in which to enjoy living.

A well-conceived timber deck can be used as an alfresco living area, thus expanding the space in your home. As winter begins to give way to spring, you may find yourself looking forward to relaxing outdoors with BBQ and your favourite beverages. A timber deck is the perfect place for both of those activities.

Here is some helpful information that can get you on the track to having a timber deck in time for the weather to warm up.

The Research Phase

To do your timber deck right, you will want to do some research. You will need to know your local council’s rules and regulations. You may have neighbourhood regulations, too. A general rule is that if your deck is more than 900mm off the ground, you will need specific council approval before you begin.

You will want to know regulations concerning size and height. If you are in a bushfire prone area, you will have restrictions on the type of timber you can use. You will need to know all of this. And if you need any permits, make sure to get them first.

What do You Want and Where do You Want It?

It is wise to know what you want out of your deck. What do you want to use it for? How large does it need to be? How sturdy? Will you want a roof of some kind over it? Do you want privacy? How can you make sure it’s ventilated well enough?

For best results, you will want to orient your timber deck on the north or northeast side of the house. This will make sure the deck gets sufficient sun from morning to afternoon. If your deck is on the south or west side of your home, it will produce extremes in temperature.

The next thing to consider is what part of your home do you want it next to. Ideally, you can put your deck near your kitchen or family room and it will be on the north or east side of your home. The orientation is more important than proximity to your favourite room, though.

Design

At Narangba Timbers, we are great believers in simplicity. We want your projects to go as easily and smoothly as possible. That’s why when it comes to timber decking, we feel the most important thing to remember is to not try to reinvent the wheel. Go with a design that is tried and true.

One of the best ways to do this is to drive around areas where there are a lot of timber decks, find a few that you like and take pictures of them. After you get an idea of what you want, try to draw a picture of your deck.

Another great way to get inspiration: come to our showroom and visit our display deck. There, you can talk to one of our decking experts who can guide you through the process. We have easy guides available, along with some standard designs that may fit your purposes and vision perfectly.
